After crisis of 2002 when promptly MBA came nearer to the end, anybody did not hope any more, that the program becomes popular again. Recent research of Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) which considered 238 programs, has pronounced the sentence: among biennial programs in 2004 78 % tested experienced shortage of students in comparison with 2003 and only 16 % experienced the increase in quantity of students.
Among the programs, lasting one year, 68 % had difficulties with quantity of students. It is interesting, that EMBA programs experienced directly opposite miracles. Three quarters of programs have noted either stable position, or sharp lifting of wishing to be trained.
Shortage of students can be explained by a demographic situation. The number of people most suitable for training at business schools by age criterion (25 years-34 year) steadily decreases.
For example, in the USA a quantity of the population at the age of 25-29 years in 2000 has fallen to 5,4 % in comparison with 1995. The increase for 2,6 % is expected only by the end of 2010. The quantity of people in age group from 30 to 34 will fall to 10 %.
In the Western Europe the situation with potential students is even more dramatic. However such situation, perhaps, should not be constant. The total number of magister degree holders, received in the USA, under forecasts of experts will increase to 491, 000 by 2011. MBA is the second for popularity magister degree which concedes only to the master of education.
The demographic situation has coincided with two other factors which seriously threaten full-time MBA. First, the increase of cost of residing, that in particular concerns foreign students.
Arriving from China and India are the traditional largest consumers of American MBA every year notice, that it becomes more and more difficult to pay for living in the USA. For this reason about a quarter of programs have felt a reduction of quantity of demands from the Chinese students and about 16 % of programs from Indian.
Secondly, visa regime toughening has led to that students submitted the documents anywhere, only not to the American schools. In Queen’s University, for example, in 2000 a quarter of students were foreigners. In 2003 their quantity has increased by 53 %.
Practically all schools notice, that keep afloat and gradually start over again to prosper only thanks to foreign students.
Situation with American MBA also is not hopeless. Appreciable increase of economy which has resulted behind increase in quantity of workplaces for potential MBA, could not remain not noticed. However now students are not such naive and trustful, as earlier. They fairly believe, that the price of American MBA is too great provided that a process of search of worthy workplace can take enough much time.
For this reason a popularity of part-time programs is growing. They allow to keep workplace and, thus, to receive a quality education.
Besides, part-time programs are extremely attractive for women. They, usually, have less working experience, they don't wont so much to be a boss, and their family can essentially restrain a rush.
Devid Wilson, chief executive of GMAC, notices, that programs full-time and part-time have different purposes. The first are designed to change cardinally the career trajectory, the second - to improve the abilities and knowledge in certain sphere in which they already work successfully.
Certainly, the students of full-time who get into debt risk and remain torn off from a labour market in for two years take a greater. Advantage of students of part-time is potential possibility to force employers to pay expenses for training.
So, difficulties with students of the full-time program is long-term prospect. Flexible programs part-time, counted on a wide audience beginning from men of chief executives and finishing various minority, grow. |
